Cylindrical roller bearings

NJ, NU, NUP, NF, N and QJ type cylindrical roller bearings in steel, brass and poly cages for heavy radial loads.

Cylindrical roller bearings use rollers instead of balls, so the load is spread along a line rather than a point. That gives them a very high radial load capacity, which is why they are used in tractor gearboxes, truck transmissions, heavy pumps and industrial gear units.

The letters show where the ribs (flanges) are: NU has ribs on the outer ring only, NJ adds one rib on the inner ring so it can take light axial load in one direction, NUP locates the shaft in both directions, and NF and N are variations of the same idea. QJ is a four point contact ball bearing often paired with them. Brass cages are tougher for shock loads; steel and poly cages suit normal duty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NJ and NU bearings?

An NU bearing has no rib on the inner ring, so the shaft can move axially. An NJ bearing has one inner rib, so it can take a light axial load in one direction. Check your housing before swapping one for the other.

Brass or steel cage: which is better?

Brass cages handle shock, vibration and high temperature better, so they are preferred in heavy vehicles and tractors. Steel cages are fine for normal duty and cost less.
